Film Review

The film 'Breathless'

The movie 'Breathless' was part of the French New Wave movement. It was created in March 16th 1960 in France. The director was Jean-Luc Godard. Godard created 'Breathless' in more harsh style, with handheld camerawork and jerky editing. Godard also juxtaposes staged scenes with documentary-like material (e.g. advertisements, comic strips, crowds passing on the streets, etc.) that often had little connection to the narrative. This film does not follow the traditional Hollywood storytelling conventions, having jump-cuts, handheld cameras, a disjointed narrative, an improvised score, and dialogue being spoken directly to the camera.

Image result for breathless filmI found that the film showed a very unique point of view on a relationship between a french scumbag and an american woman wanting to have her own independence from men. The way the man spoke to the woman was shocking to me, how he was always talking on wanting to have sex with her, not considering on if she wanted to or not. Also how the man had little respect for women and if he saw a woman wearing a shirt walking down the street, he would run up to her, flick her shirt up to see her underwear and then run off. This was disgusting behavior to me, as a girl, I would find if horrifying to have my shirt thrown upwards by a perverted man. It was a very interesting film to watch. I not only learned a new type of love some people have with each other, and how some people use/steal others belongings in order to get more ahead in life, without considering them at all. I found it shell-shocking (being raised in a home were we must respect other and other's stuff).

It is a classic film to watch and would recommend this film to watch, due to the interesting setting and time period.
